Toledo

It’s safe to say that we have assimilated :). We both slept well over 8 hours last night and woke up by 9am. Also, we just finished dinner. It’s 11pm. Yes! We are basically Spaniards.

It was an adventurous day, again. We still have the rental car so we are learning to drive on tiny streets filled with pedestrians traffic. Lucky for me, Nick insisted on an automatic transmission so the hills aren’t so much of a problem.

First time driving in Europe!
Teeny tiny streets

We started the morning in Segovia, where Nick drove through tiny passagesways to get out of town and onto views of the castle. He drove us 2+hours to Toledo, Spain and did so great, roundabouts and all.

Castle of Segovia

We also saw one more castle, La Granja de San Idelfonso. It’s the “Versailles of Spain”. Absolutely gorgeous gardens, fountains and an enormous castle.

At lunch, (3pm) we chose a hotel in Toledo (our only unplanned night of the trip), a beautiful medieval walled city. Over lunch we decided to drive to the hotel to avoid carrying bags up the hillside. Since Nick had been driving all day, I took over. We had to drive through the entire walled city to get to our hotel and it’s parking structure. It didn’t seem like a big deal but at some point, I took a wrong turn. Onto a pedestrian walkway. Our tiny hatchback roller skate car barely made it around a turn at which point we were stuck in a plaza (re: square) and everyone was staring at us.

I stopped the car, assessed the situation and then rolled down the window for a nice Spaniard man who walked up to help us. He explained that we had taken the wrong turn and basically there was no way out. Construction on one side has the road closed and all the other roads are too small. Also, the whole walled city is a large confusing combination of one-way roads. So we did the only thing we could think of…. A painful 5-point U-turn, nice Spaniard on one side, Nick on the other. Back down the wrong way of a One-way road
Our little red rollerskate was squashed between a church and road pillars, enforcing the Do Not Drive here vibe. Reverse- Drive- Reverse- Drive- Reverse- Drive- Reverse- Drive, etc…. The guys got me out but it was quite stressful. I asked Nick to take a picture but seems it wasn’t the right time. 😉. We’re good, we’re safe and we made it to our cute hotel all the way up with the car!!! We even had time to check out a museum of catapults, bows and arrows and real dungeons. Also, a yummy and late dinner in Toledo!

Nick in the dungeons! At one time, they’d put 40 men in here!!

Most American meal yet, sadly, but delicious!

Another long drive tomorrow, be on the lookout for our last amazing castle pictures. The Alhambra of Granada. Enjoy the photos!

It seems more interesting to read your account of the escapades (less stress) than actually being there! Keep the pics coming. Have fun, eat well, stay safe!
